Q: My bathroom outlets are not working and all the breakers are on. What is the problem?
A: Most homes after 1980 have a Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI). These are outlets with the test and reset button on them. These safety devices are normally located in all potential wet locations. to reset the GFI, just push the reset button and the power should be restored. If there is an outlet that does not have the reset button, the outlet is more than likely to be attached to a GFI receptacle that is tripped. these devices are usually found in bathrooms, kitchen counter receptacles, outdoor receptacles, garage receptacles, and unfinished basement wall receptacles.
Q: The breaker in the main electrical panel tripped. When I turned it back on, there still is no power and the breaker is in the on position.
A: If a breaker trips, it means there is a fault in the circuit. there could be a short, over amperage, or bad breaker. Push the breaker all the way to the off position and then turn back on, if the power comes on and stays on, you should be ok. If it goes back to the center with a bang or lightning bolt behind it, please give us a call.
Q: My smoke detector chirps even after I change the batteries. Why is it chirping?
A: Most likely the smoke detector is faulty and in need of replacement. It is a good idea that if one smoke detector is going bad, it is wise to replace the rest of them. The units are recommended to be replaced after 10 years of service due to the dust and particles in the air clog up the sensor causing false alarms and chirping.
